Running a business in Malaysia involves understanding various tax obligations. One of the most important taxes businesses must be aware of is the Sales and Service Tax (SST). Knowing how SST works and whether your business needs to register helps ensure compliance and avoids penalties.

This guide explains what SST is, how it works, and which businesses are required to register.

What Is SST?

Sales and Service Tax (SST) is an indirect tax system implemented in Malaysia. It replaced the Goods and Services Tax (Malaysia) (GST) in September 2018.

SST consists of two separate taxes:

1. Sales Tax

Sales Tax is imposed on taxable goods that are manufactured in Malaysia or imported into the country.

It is typically charged by manufacturers or importers when goods are sold. The tax rate usually ranges between 5% and 10%, depending on the type of product.

Examples of goods that may be subject to Sales Tax include:

  • Electronics
  • Furniture
  • Household goods
  • Processed food products

2. Service Tax

Service Tax is charged on certain taxable services provided to customers. The standard Service Tax rate is 6%, although some services may have different rates.

Examples of businesses that may charge Service Tax include:

  • Restaurants and cafes
  • Hotels and accommodation providers
  • Professional services (consultants, accountants, etc.)
  • Telecommunications providers

Who Needs to Register for SST?

Not all businesses in Malaysia are required to register for SST. Registration is mandatory only when businesses meet certain criteria and revenue thresholds set by the Royal Malaysian Customs Department.

Businesses Required to Register for Sales Tax

Manufacturers must register for Sales Tax if their annual sales value of taxable goods exceeds RM500,000.

Once registered, the manufacturer must charge Sales Tax on taxable goods and submit tax returns to the authorities.

Businesses Required to Register for Service Tax

Service providers must register for Service Tax if their annual taxable service revenue exceeds the required threshold, which is typically RM500,000 per year (though this may vary depending on the industry).

For example, a restaurant generating more than RM500,000 annually would generally need to register and charge Service Tax to customers.

Benefits of Registering for SST

Registering for SST ensures your business operates legally and avoids compliance issues. Some benefits include:

  • Avoiding penalties and legal complications
  • Building credibility with customers and partners
  • Ensuring proper tax reporting and transparency
  • Maintaining compliance with Malaysian tax regulations

How to Register for SST

Businesses can register for SST through the MySST portal provided by the Royal Malaysian Customs Department.

The registration process generally involves:

  1. Preparing business registration documents
  2. Providing financial information showing annual revenue
  3. Submitting the application online
  4. Receiving an SST registration number upon approval
