If you’re looking to start a construction business in Malaysia on a budget, your best shot is registering as a G1 contractor—CIDB’s entry-level grade with the lowest requirements.

As of today, there are 68,520 active G1 contractors. If they can do it, so can you! Here is your quick-start guide.

1. Minimum Requirements

There are three main requirements to get your foot in the door:

  • Paid-up Capital: RM5,000 (or RM10,000 if you want an SPKK certificate).
  • Staffing: Employ at least one Technical Certificate holder.
  • Maintenance: Obtain at least 10 CCD points annually for license renewal.

What is SPKK? It stands for Sijil Perolehan Kerja Kerajaan. It allows G1 contractors to compete for government tenders worth up to RM200,000. We highly recommend it.

2. Required Documents

Before you log in, have these digital copies ready:

  • Academic/Technical certificates
  • FM Resume (if applying for category F)
  • Certificate of Registration for Competent Persons
  • SSM/Company Docs: Annual Returns, Financial Statements, or Partnership Agreements.
  • Director List: Specifically for Sdn Bhd companies.

3. The 4-Step Registration Process

Applications are made via the CIDB CIMS portal. Note: The account must be created by a company director or owner.

  1. Choose Grade: Select G1 as your intended grade.
  2. Upload: Attach your supporting documents.
  3. Pay Application Fee: RM50.
  4. Final Payment: Pay the RM20 annual fee once approved.

4. The Timeline

If your documentation is in order, CIDB typically processes applications within seven working days. Once approved, you can renew your license for up to three years at a time, provided you have earned enough CCD points (Continuous Contractor Development) through workshops and seminars.
